Extra Reading: Jataka Tales

Bibliography: Noor Inayat, The Patient Buffalo, The Patient Buffalo

*This completes my free reading, Jataka "focus" for the semester!

*There was once a big and beautiful buffalo that lived under a tree. A monkey also lived in the tree and had a mischievous disposition.

*The monkey constantly did things to try and get on the buffalo's nerves. The buffalo, however, was always very patient and docile, which only seemed to egg the monkey on more.

*The monkey did things like jump on the buffalos back, swing around on his horns, stomp on the grass he liked to graze, and other potentially annoying things.

*One day, a fairy appeared (typical Jataka tale) and sought to remind the buffalo of his strength. She pointed out his horns that could easily pierce the monkey, his feet that could easily crush rocks (let alone the monkey) and his sheer strength and size.

*The buffalo replies by saying the monkey is small, weak and clearly not intelligent. Such a life merits no punishment.

*The fairy smiles, and casts the monkey away. She puts a charm on the buffalo that keeps anyone from trying to harass him again. And they all live happily ever after.
