Reading: Jataka Tales

Bibliography: Noor Inayat, The Guilty Dogs, The Guilty Dogs

*I chose this Jataka tale because it opened up the opportunity for a funny dog pic!😂

*There was once a king whose castle was beautiful. He traveled by chariot and every night, the horses were put in the stable while the chariot was left in the courtyard.

*The chariot was bound to the castle with beautiful straps. One night, it began to rain and the straps were weakened by the water.

*Also living in the castle were the king's royal dogs. In the kingdom, there were about seven hundred other dogs who had a chief.

*The dogs of the palace decided they would use the opportunity to take the chariot during the night and play with it. They returned it, but the guards new it was taken because the straps were broken off of it.

*The guards realize the straps were bitten off by dogs, and they inform the king. The king decides to have every dog in the kingdom killed, for they could not tell the exact ones who were responsible.

*The king spares the royal dogs, thinking they are surely not guilty. The seven hundred kingdom dogs go to their chief, who realizes only the royal dogs have access to the castle courtyard.

*The chief, having beautiful eyes, intimidates the guards in the kingdom, including the castle guards, and eventually finds his way to king.

*He informs the king that it was likely the royal dogs, and the king gives his dogs grass and buttermilk to make them throw up. They spit up bits of leather, and the king realizes the kingdom dogs are innocent.

*To repay them for the scare, the king feeds and cares for all seven hundred dogs every single day. And, as usual, they all live happily ever after.
