Real Housewives of Greek Mythology

The first storybook I found intriguing was one that features a "Real Housewives" twist on the goddesses of Greek mythology. I found that the title immediately grabbed my attention, given the easily recognizable pop-culture reference. While the actual television show usually features a location in the title, marking a distinction between each sub-series, this title brings specific and recognizable characters to mind. When the reading the introduction, I got a strong sense of irony. One would normally perceive goddesses as creatures of intellect and class, rather than the drunken party animals commonly featured on the real show. I found this clever twist on mythology both humorous and intellectually challenging as it allowed me to think back on mythological stories from past academic endeavors.

The Un-Told Stories of Spongebob

Another storybook I found witty and entertaining was a story that mutually explores a pop-culture twist. This storybook is written based on the characters of the animated show, "Spongebob Squarepants". The writings feature a sort of fan-fiction on the many characters and their interpersonal relationships in the actual show. I found the introduction very humorous, particularly when the author mentions a date that the character, Sandy Cheeks, is planning to go on. Sandy, being a squirrel, is allegedly planning to go on a date with an eagle, a natural predator of squirrels in nature. The author even goes as far as to say they don't think the date will go very well, playing on the unspoken understanding that she may become the meal. I definitely consider this a clever way to accomplish assignment guidelines while utilizing material that the author and readers will easily connect with and understand.

Toto's Adventures in Oz

The last storybook I chose to explore was also one that features a twist on film/television, but it involves a less-recent production. This storybook is told from the perspective of the dog of Dorothy Gail, the main character in the popular and classic "Wizard of Oz" movie. I found this intriguing because the character of Toto is portrayed by an actual dog in the movie, rather than an actor in a costume; other animals are commonly played by humans and are given dialogue. Because Toto only gives the occasional bark in the film, it was so interesting and entertaining to explore his thoughts on the events from the story, such as the tornado that landed him in Oz.
