Reading Notes: Sita Sings the Blues

Reading Notes for the Ramayana Animation, by Nina Paley:

*Sita, daughter of Janaka, marries Rama, son of Dasharatha

*Rama=Avatar of Vishnu (like Jesus is God on Earth, Rama is like Vishnu on Earth)

*After Rama is crowned king, he is exiled and his father dies. Sita follows him into exile and they live in peace in the forest, occupying a hut as their home

*Ravana, king of demons(??), hears from his sister(??) that Sita is the most beautiful woman in all of India

*Ravana sends a servent to transform as a beautiful deer to lure Rama away from Sita. He then captures Sita and flies away

*Hanuman, a monkey-man, was born with the sole purpose of finding Rama and helping him get Sita back

*Sita, staying faithful, is eventually discovered by Hanuman who gets Rama to help him kill the demons

*After being rescued, Sita is rejected by Rama because he suspects she has been unfaithful during her time in captivity.

----meanwhile, a husband (dave) and wife (idk) are having issues because the husband moved to India for work and changed a lot during his time there. The wife joins him eventually in India but he seems uninterested in her (does this parallel Rama and Sita??)
