Extra Reading: More Jataka Tales

Bibliography: Noor Inayat, The Forest Fire, Forest Fire

For extra reading this week, I decided to read another Jataka tale!

*There was a mother and father quail living in a nest in the forest. They had seven little baby quail.

*The mother and father would bring food back to the nest everyday, bringing insects and other protein sources. Six of the quail would get to eat the good food, but the same little seventh quail always got stuck with grass seeds.

*Because of this feeding system, six of the quail grew strong wings that could fly. The seventh never grew strong enough to fly.

*One day, the quail all awoke to a large fire sweeping through the forest. The little birds warned their parents, and when the fire approached, they all flew away.

*The littlest bird, however, could not fly because he was too weak. When the fire approached he stood his ground and told the fire it had nothing to gain from burning him up.

*Upon speaking to the fire, the bird watched the flames stop in their tracks and eventually die out. The frogs and forest creatures realized they were saved, and the little quail lived happily alone in the nest.
