Here are some possible project topics for my Indian Epics project! I've included links to possible web sources in each topic's title:
Weapons of the Gods: I've chosen this particular topic because I'm a huge super-hero/action movie nerd, and getting to learn about mythological and celestial weapons definitely peaks my interest. My knowledge of weaponry is probably equal to the average person, streaming mostly from pop culture sources like movies and TV shows. I think developing a knowledge of different weapons can bring an exciting edge to my storytelling, and give a repertoire of different items to feature in the plot. The weapon that most interests me is the "Trident of Madhu", which is said to have been wielded by Rakshasas and is thought to be unstoppable.
Epic Battles: Similarly to the reasons I've outlined above, the battles that are featured in Indian epics certainly appeal to my love of action. This is a topic that I especially know nothing about, but I know the articles and stories associated with this topic would be exciting and interesting to read. Additionally, having a lot of examples on how to tell the story of an epic battle will serve my own writing ability. I hope to receive incite on how to paint the setting, how to describe the action, and what the conflicts of the time may have been.
Elephants: This topic is more unique to my own preferences, as elephants have always been my favorite animal! Growing up, I would beg my parents to take me to the zoo just to see them, and even missed seeing other animal exhibits in order to spend more time with the elephants. I don't know much about their place in Indian literature, but I do recall seeing them in many movies that feature middle-eastern and Asian culture. I hope to learn more about what an elephant may represent symbolically, and see some examples of how they are featured in other stories.
Music: This is another topic that is unique to my personal experiences, and is an obvious attraction for me as a vocal music major. In the conventional, western practice of music and in the music school at OU, we concentrate on the classical genre and opera more than anything. While it leads to the exposure of European culture, particularly Italian, French and German, it rarely requires the American musician to explore any others. Given that India is thought to have rich and beautiful musical traditions, I can't wait to explore some different varieties of music in hopes to make comparisons to the different practices I've already studied.
