Week 2 Reading Overview

After reviewing the options for reading the Ramayana stories in week 3, I believe the wisest option for me is to use the free, online-accessible option. My first concern when reading about both of the options was which would use more contemporary word choice/sentence structure. I often find that with an older literary work, I have to read a single sentence several times to understand exactly what the author is saying. However, the online-accessible option is totally free and I love the fact that there is an audio-recording as I generally learn from a combination of audio/visual stimulus.

Some things I found interesting in today's assignment include the wide variety of listening examples by Maati Baani. I found the music to be extremely different from what we generally study in our OU music department, and the fact that the group is a husband/wife pair is unique and exciting. I originally invested some time in looking at this group because Professor Gibbs regarded them as her favorite. However, I quickly grew an admiration for the contemporary vocal style and the way it fits seamlessly with the accompaniment style. I love getting the chance to explore new music and the way it has adapted across many cultures. Another youtube resource that interests me is the Diwali Story; I haven't known many people who celebrate Diwali but I know it is an important piece of Hindu culture and I would love to know more about the holiday.

Of the OU comic book options, I found Parashurama to be the most interesting in terms of plot synopsis. I am intrigued by the author's choice to cast mother nature herself to influence the end of Parashurama's killing. I also found Garuda interesting as the animal-like elements of the characters are unusual and peak my desire to know more about the story. I've included a picture of Hanuman below; though I am not familiar with the character, he mutually exhibits animal-like traits.
