For extra reading this week, I've decided to catch up on the Mahabharata!
Bibliography: Arnold, Besant, Devee, Dutt, Ganguli, Kincaid, Macfie, Mackenzie, Nivedita, Seeger, and Tagore, PDE Mahabharata Part D, Mahabharata
*Arjuna kills Bhishma with arrows. Duryodhana, other friends and enemies alike came to mourn over his dead body.
*After his death, Drona takes command of Duryodhana's forces. Drona wants to make Yudhishthira his prisoner and Arjuna wants to defend his brother even if it will kill him.
*Abhimanyu dies alone behind enemy lines, and Arjuna seeks Krishna's help to get revenge. Bhima also loses his Rakshasa son.
*The Pandavas have to use trickery to bring about the death of the old guru- this is one of the largest moral crises in the Mahabharata. Ashwatthaman sought vengeance for the death of Drona and tries to kill the Pandavas while they sleep. Discovering Shiva, he casts his own body into Shiva's flames.
*There is an episode called "Mourning" in which the various parents mourn over their children, and vice versa.
*Yudhishthira plans to use horse sacrifice to gain imperial kingship. He blessed members of the kingdom and himself, holding the horn of a stag. Then poured holy water on himself and the white horse and sat naked on his throne.
*After many terrible omens, Krishna dies in the Jungle. His father also dies shortly after, and Arjuna takes care of the old man's body.
*Following Krishna's death, the Pandavas and Drauapdi decide their time on earth is over. They leave the kingdom in the hands of Parikshit- Arjuna's grandson.
