Extra Reading Notes: Mahabharata B

I've chosen to do my extra reading on part B of the Mahabharata to get all caught up!

Bibliography:  Arnold, Besant, Devee, Dutt, Ganguli, Kincaid, MacfieMackenzie, Nivedita, Seeger, and Tagore, PDE Mahabharata Part B, Mahabharata

*Vidura is the brother of Pandu and Dhritarashtra, and wiser than both of them. (their children constantly battling). Vidura's mother was a servant, so he was never considered for the throne. He is a member of Dhritarashtra's court but is loyal to the sons of Pandu.

*The Pandava boys, who used to live in the wilderness before their mother brought them to the big city, return to the wilderness where they face its many dangers (including rakshasas).

*Bhima and Hidimbi (a rakshasi) have a pleasant love affair. Kunti rescued her, brought her to Bhima and implored him to take her as his wife. The two were married and moved into the mountains where they have a son (whose name stands for "pot-headed" lol). Then Bhima returns to the Pandava's, with the promise that his son will help him in times of need.

*The Pandava's are still living in hiding disguised as brahmins. The supernatural birth of Draupadi and her swayamwara (picking of a wife) brings them out of this hiding.

*Arjuna wins Draupadi as his wife. In accordance to the Pandavan mother's accidental command, the five Pandavas must become her five husbands. Multiple wives is not abnormal, but multiple husbands is very farfetched.

*The complicated marriages yield many rules, which are broken Arjuna who is sent into exile for an allotted amount of time.  He has many incredible encounters during his time in exile, including one with the Naga princess.

*Arjuna and Krishna meet with Maya (masculine form of the noun), the architect of the gods, which leads to a series of catastrophic events in the epic. After receiving celestial weapons, the two defeat Indra. (The forest is burnt to restore Agni's power; he gives them the celestial weapons).

*Yudhishthira uses a ritual sacrifice to declare his own power in the monarch, meaning he must confront Jarasandha. This also leads to a gruesome confrontation between Krishna and Shishupala.

*Though the Pandava's seem to have escaped a terrible fate, there is going to be a second meeting of which the ending will allegedly be as bad as the first. -----a swastika has been misappropriated by Nazi Germany... it is actually a symbol of good luck in ancient India.
