*Vyasa= author and character in the Mahabharata. He is speaking it to the god Ganesha, on the orders of Brahma. Brahma= the creator god in Hinduism.
*King Uparichara is the father of the two children (he was flying around on his gift from the gods and his seamen fell into the water, impregnating a fish). He took the boy and left the girl. The girl gave birth to Vyasa (despite being a virgin??)
*Devavrata/Bhishma = one of the most important characters. Son of king Shantanu and the godess Ganga. He is human but possess the power of the eight gods (Vasus). His mother begged the Vasus for the power but drowned the other seven of her children.
*The mother of Vyasa and father of Devavrata become a couple (love interest) after Ganga deserted him.
*Devavrata renounced the throne and chose to be called Bhishma. He had various men rule in his place and ruled for a while during the childhood of Vichitravirya.
*Through battle, he seizes the three daughters of the king of Kashi. They become the wives of the son of Shantanu and Satyavati. Two of them do but Amba is unique and has her own story in the epic.
*Before the two wives could bear any children, the husband dies and Satyavati purposed that Vyasa becomes the king.
*Kunti has the child Karna long before, and he is one of the most complex people in the epic. His mother is the wife of king Pandu. Karna is a mighty bowman
*Pandu killed a sage in deer form and is cursed, but still manages to have many children. He does, however, die in doing so as a result of the curse.
*The sons of Pandu and the sons of Dhritarashtra = the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Their on-going rivalry is the central theme and plot-point of the entire epic. Duryodhana is the oldest son and leader of the Kauravas.
*The sons were raised together after the five sons of Pandu return from the remote Himalayas. They are raised by the bling king, Dhritarashtra, in the royal city of Hastinapura.
*In attempt to kill the cousins, the oldest son of Kauravas, Duryodhana tries to summon nagas (serpents) to kill the second son of Pandu.
