Reading Notes: Jataka Tales

Bibliography: Noor Inayat, Twenty Jataka Tales, The Great Elephant

**I chose this Jataka tale because elephants are the best animal of all time**

*An elephant lives alone like a hermit in a beautiful oasis. He ate the fruits of the oasis and drank water from the river, dancing around alone everyday.

*The oasis was in a desert, so when the elephant heard approaching voices, he was surely confused. He finds men on the brink of death, and sheds some of his first tears.

*The men say there was originally 1,000 of them, exiled from their homes by their king, and many of them had perished along the way. They ask the elephant for food and water.

*The elephant directs them to a place in which they will find food. He actually jumps from a high rock and dies in the place he tells them they'll find food. He actually died on purpose and wanted them to use his body for food.

*The men hesitate, as the elephant was beautiful and kind when alive, but they eventually eat him so his sacrifice is not in vain. They get very strong and make safe passage to a new town to live in.
